Open letter to the community:
The town of Thompson is a real haven to long-time locals, new residents who recently discovered the year-round treasures hidden here and the summer imports who fill our camps, bungalow colonies and seasonal homes.
It’s where I’ve lived, where I’ve invested my personal time and my professional skills, where I raised my children.
The town, an area famous for its beautiful lakes and streams and yet offers sophisticated activities such as harness racing and world class golf and tennis, encompasses 90.48 square miles of land with the Village of Monticello’s size being approximately 3.5 square miles.
The town includes the hamlets of Rock Hill, Harris, Kiamesha Lake, Thompsonville, Glen Wild and Sackett Lake and several upscale “second home” developments.
We in local government take great pride in what we’ve helped shape here, from the commercial development, including Wal-Mart, Staples and Home Depot, to the open space preservation.
This town truly does have one of the most progressive voices in government, openly courting economic development enterprises to both broaden the local tax base and add necessary conveniences to the community. At the same time, we also take pride in requiring extensive environmental reviews for all proposals that cross our desks.
I am a fulltime supervisor who has always maintained an open-door policy for all residents and visitors, an unwritten policy that extends to every department throughout the Town of Thompson. The supervisor is the chief elected officer of the town and carries out the policies of the town board.
So on behalf of the entire town council, I invite you to come enjoy our heavenly mountains, fresh air, clean water, and our deep-rooted history.
And please, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, just stop by Town Hall anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. We’re here to help.
